Now America’s Oldest City Has Its Own Gold~ AGAIN!

George Chryssaidis, owner of Athena Café, Café Alcazar and Georgie’s Diner in historic St. Augustine, has once again brought his family’s treasured olive oil to America from Frixa, Greece.  Making its debut four years ago at Chryssaidis’ first Greek restaurant, he shared Frixa’s rich, flavorful and aromatic essence with patrons. The olive oil was an overwhelming hit with customers and regional restaurateurs. A day didn’t pass without Chryssaidis inviting guests to dip warm bread into the heavenly (natural and unrefined) ‘liquid gold’, as ancient Greek poet Homer named it.

When the devastating fires of 2007 destroyed nearly 50% of the olive trees in the little hamlet of Frixa, it didn’t seem as if the crop would ever survive. But Chryssaidis is proud to announce that nearly 95% of the trees came back with the same exquisite olive crop that rivals the best years prior to the unforgettable inferno.

IN THE BEGINNING

Old school chums Chryssaidis and Yeorgios Kostopoulos work closely to bring their premier olive oil to the U.S. While Kostopoulos oversees the growing, harvesting, pressing and bottling of their outstanding olives, Chryssaidis handles the importing and marketing that face all new product developers.  Their harvest produces an exclusive limited production not being offered to the large importers, but instead sold only to the discerning public, specialty stores, restaurants and of course Chryssaidis’ three restaurants. A small Jacksonville Florida distributor, Royal Beverages, appreciates its superiority and is handling the limited distribution.

Along with the historic and mythological relevance of the Greek Goddess Athena bringing her magical powers to the Athenian citizens, St. Augustine’s pride as America’s oldest city pairs well with Frixa’s significance. In ancient Greece and Rome, olive oil was the hottest commodity.  It was believed that olive oil brought people strength and youth; infused with flowers and grasses, they produced medicine and cosmetics. Even the olive tree had a ‘titanic’ resistance, a vital force which rendered them nearly immortal.

LABEL DESIGN

“I respect and enjoy many of the talented students here at Flagler College. I asked Chris Smith, Art Department Instructor, to organize a graphic design class project/competition to submit artwork for our Frixa label” Chryssaidis proudly admits.  “More than 20 designs were submitted and Alicia Plakotaris submitted the winning golden mask of King Agamemnon, a compelling and excellent representation.  It’s very meaningful to us as we share our olive oil that began with St. Augustine’s community spirit.

Ms. Plakotaris states “Having the opportunity to do real life projects at Flagler College was a great experience.  As students, getting our work out in the open gives us an appreciation for the graphic design industry.”

Smith concurs “The graphic design department of Flagler College has an ongoing commitment to learning which often encompasses projects that benefit the students and our community.  The Frixa assignment brought a design opportunity to the students with a professional real-world business challenge that the students embraced and enjoyed.”

IT’S GOOD FOR YOU

Frixa comes in 3 sizes: 250ml, 500ml, 750ml. ($10, $15, $20).

In addition to the nutritional qualities of extra virgin olive oil, and being the most digestible of the edible fats, it is often known to slow down the aging process.  Its magical culinary virtues bring a flavor, bouquet and color to each dish, something that Chryssaidis values in his own restaurant.  “We enjoy sharing our family’s most important gift with other families and patrons in our region and throughout the country.  There is no better place to start than in St. Augustine, where visitors have journeyed for centuries to find the quality of long life, pleasure in the sunshine and along the ocean.  My ancestors would be proud to know we’re continuing the tradition of abundance, glory and peace, the symbol of the olive tree.”

FROM THE MOUNTAINS OF GREECE

Dried Long-Stem Oregano. ($10)

What a treat to pair Frixa Olive Oil with exquisite and aromatic freshly dried Long-Stem Oregano. Frixa products include this important culinary herb whose leaves are used in cooking; dried oregano is often more flavorful than fresh. In Greek cuisine, oregano is widely used to add flavor to many dishes, especially rich when combined with lemon and olive oil, accompanying fish, casseroles, salads and on the table side-by-side with salt & pepper!
